Stanford students are expected to be fully engaged in their academic programs
so that they can complete their undergraduate degrees in four years. Hence,
undergraduates are expected to carry a full-time academic load of at least
12 units per quarter and to pay the requisite regular tuition rate. Less than
full-time study, and consequently reduced tuition, may be permitted in the
categories specified below. The Registrar, in consultation with the Subcommittee
on Academic Standing, is responsible for approving each request to register
for less than a full-time academic load.

to reside in campus housing and may audit classes, but may not
earn credit. A student with PTA status is not eligible for financial
aid. Courses attended do not appear on the transcript. |

This status is granted only once: during the final quarter of registration
for a student who must be registered to work on a honors thesis;
to complete work to clear an incomplete grade in a course required
for graduation; or to carry out responsibilities as a residential
adviser. A student with PSO status is not eligible for financial

Matriculated graduate students are expected to register at the full-tuition
rate applicable to their degree program unless they are in the final stages
of their degree programs and therefore in a special reduced tuition category.
Eligible categories include Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) and Graduate
Final Requirement Registration (GFR). For more detail, see the Graduate
Student Handbook.
During the Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, matriculated graduate students in most departments may register at less than the full tuition rate if their enrollment plans are accepted by their departments.
Special conditions apply to students admitted as coterminal graduate students;
for more information, click here to download Procedures
for Coterminal Students (pdf).
Students in the Law School, Graduate School of Business, or in the M.D program in the School of Medicine should consult appropriate school officers about tuition reduction eligibility.

from Stanford on the 17th day of the Autumn Quarter would be assessed $2,280.04
(17 x $134.12) in tuition. The student would be eligible for a refund of
$8,717.96 ($10,998.00 - $2,280.04) minus any scholarship or loan funds
that would be returned to the source of those funds.
