Special Tuition Rates for Undergraduates

Stanford students are expected to be fully engaged in their academic programs so that they can complete their undergraduate degrees in four years. Hence, undergraduates are expected to carry a full-time academic load of at least 12 units per quarter and to pay the requisite regular tuition rate. Less than full-time study, and consequently reduced tuition, may be permitted in the categories specified below. The Registrar, in consultation with the Subcommittee on Academic Standing, is responsible for approving each request to register for less than a full-time academic load.

Reduced Tuition Schedule — Undergraduates
Reduced Tuition Type Effective Quarters Eligibility Min Enroll Units Tuition
per Qtr
2007-08
13th Quarter Aut/Win/Spr Undergraduates who have completed a minimum of 12 quarters of full-time enrollment, who are eligible to graduate, and who have applied to graduate may petition to register in the final quarter for a minimum of 8 units. 8 $8,508
9 $9,281
10 $10,054
11 $10,827
Permit to Attend Aut/Win/Spr When deemed academically appropriate, the Permit to Attend status is granted on a one-time only basis. An undergraduate is permitted to reside in campus housing and may audit classes, but may not earn credit. A student with PTA status is not eligible for financial aid. Courses attended do not appear on the transcript. 0 $2,760
Permit to Attend for Services Only (PSO) Aut/Win/Spr This status is granted only once: during the final quarter of registration for a student who must be registered to work on a honors thesis; to complete work to clear an incomplete grade in a course required for graduation; or to carry out responsibilities as a residential adviser. A student with PSO status is not eligible for financial aid and may not enroll in courses, but may remain in campus housing. 0 $2,760
Variable Unit Rate Aut/Win/Spr This rate is available to undergraduates with serious medical emergencies or students covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act who have been recommended for an approved reduced course load by the Student Disabilities Resource Center. Minimum course load is 8 units. 8 $8,508
9 $9,281
10 $10,054
11 $10,827

Tuition for Graduate Students

Matriculated graduate students are expected to register at the full-tuition rate applicable to their degree program unless they are in the final stages of their degree programs and therefore in a special reduced tuition category. Eligible categories include Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) and Graduate Final Requirement Registration (GFR). For more detail, see the Graduate Student Handbook.

During the Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, matriculated graduate students in most departments may register at less than the full tuition rate if their enrollment plans are accepted by their departments.

Special conditions apply to students admitted as coterminal graduate students; for more information, click here to download Procedures for Coterminal Students (pdf).

Students in the Law School, Graduate School of Business, or in the M.D program in the School of Medicine should consult appropriate school officers about tuition reduction eligibility.

Tuition Refund Schedule: 2007-08

Tuition is refunded on a per diem basis starting with the first day through the first 60 percent of the term for each quarter. The per diem tuition rates for 2007-08 are listed below. Example: an undergraduate who withdraws from Stanford on the 17th day of Autumn Quarter would be assessed $2,404.82 (17 days x $141.46) in tuition. The student would be eligible for a refund of $9,195.18 ($11,600 - $2,404.82) minus any scholarship or loan funds that would be returned to the source of those funds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coterm Billing:

Q: Why am I being charged graduate tuition?
A: Coterminal students are assessed the graduate tuition rate after the completion of 12 quarters, if the undergraduate degree is conferred, or if graduate aid (RA/TA) is granted. 15 units of transfer credit equals one Stanford quarter. Stanford quarters and transfer credit are combined to determine completed quarters. Click here to download a pdf of procedures for coterminal students.
Q: I have completed over 180 units. Can I be moved to graduate billing?
A: Students who have less than 12 quarters of enrollment at Stanford but have 180 units (including transfer credit, but not AP test credit) may request to be moved to the graduate billing rate. Be aware that you will be billed based upon units. The 11-18 unit rate is higher than the 8-10 unit rate. If you wish to drop to the 8-10 unit rate, you must drop units by the quarterly drop deadline. Summer graduate billing is on a per-unit basis. See the Quarterly Time Schedule for tuition information. To request a move to graduate billing submit a Student Service Center Help Ticket.
Q: Now that I am billed as a graduate student, will I still be able to enroll in courses required for my undergraduate degree program?

A: If your undergraduate degree has not yet been conferred, you may still enroll and apply courses to your undergraduate degree program. Consult your department about department requirements. See the Quarterly Time Schedule for tuition rates.

Q: What is the unit limit and tuition limit for a coterm student? How is tuition calculated if I enroll in over 20 units?

A: Since coterm students have two active programs, you may enroll in the maximum units allowed in each program: 20 units for undergraduates and 24 for graduates. If you are being charged as an undergraduate coterm student, your tuition is at the regular full- time undergraduate rate. If you are charged as a graduate coterm student, the tuition will be at a per unit rate for each unit over 18.

Q: I am a coterm student and have completed all my course work. I have applied to graduate to receive both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I am not planning to enroll in courses this term. What should my registration status be?

A: Coterm students are not eligible for a Permit for Services Only (PSO), Permit to Attend (PTA), or 13th Quarter tuition rates. You may, however, be eligible for Graduation Quarter Status instead. See item #9.9 in procedures for coterminal students (pdf).
