Coterminal students are not eligible for Permit to Attend for Services Only (PSO) or 13th Quarter. These special registration statuses are only available to undergraduates.
Coterminal students are not eligible for the Graduate Petition for Part-Time Enrollment (formerly Graduate Tuition Adjustment) prior to conferral of the undergraduate degree. After the undergraduate degree is conferred (and only the master's degree is active), the student may be eligible to apply for the Graduate Petition for Part-Time Enrollment.
Coterminal students are eligible to apply for Graduation Quarter (pdf) special registration status only if they will be conferring both the undergraduate and graduate degree at the same time. Coterm students must meet all degree requirements for both their undergraduate and graduate careers, and obtain signatures of approval from both programs in order to be eligible for this special registration status.
Coterms that have both the undergraduate and graduate degrees active may not use Graduation Quarter to just confer the undergraduate degree. After the undergraduate degree is conferred (and only the master's degree is active), the student may be eligible to apply for Graduation Quarter to confer the graduate degree. Please see the Special Registration Statuses for Graduate & Professional Students page for further information.
Coterm leave of absences apply to both the undergraduate and the graduate careers (i.e., students may not take a leave of absence in only one career), and therefore must be approved by the Undergraduate Advising and Research advisor and Residence Dean, as well as by the graduate department. Students can request a leave of absence by submitting the Leave of Absence form. Note: once the undergraduate degree has conferred (or if the leave being requested is to go into effect after the undergraduate degree will be conferred), students only need to obtain approval for such a leave from their graduate deparment. In the event the undergraduate degree conferral is denied, the student must go back to obtain the signature of approval from the Undergraduate Advising and Research advisor and Residence Dean.
Unlike traditionally admitted graduate students, coterm students are permitted to request a leave of absence in their first graduate quarter (if approved for both their undergraduate and graduate careers).
Students are allowed a total of eight quarters on a leave of absence status, and includes any leave of absence taken while continuously active at Stanford. In other words, if a student took a leave of absence while an undergraduate student, those count against the permissible eight quarters. The maximum number of permissible leave of absence quarters does not increase by becoming a coterm.
